The turtle, wanting to be the wisest, stole everyone's brains with a gourd. She could not climb the palm because of the gourd hanging round her neck; a child put her right, and she threw it down in a rage. Orunmila sent the child to share them out, and they ended up swapped.
The turtle (ayapá) wanted to be like the serpent and have everyone render her moforibale. She thought: «if I take everyone's brain away, I will be the wise one and they will all come to my feet». She hung a gourd from her neck and took the brain of each one she came across. With the gourd full, she wanted to hide it at the top of a palm, but she could not climb because the gourd hanging at her neck was in the way; she sweated and tired herself without seeing why. A child who was watching her said: «put the gourd behind you, on your back, and you will be able to climb». The turtle, humiliated that a child should know more, threw the gourd down in a rage and left.
The child picked up the gourd, saw it full of human brains and went to Orunmila, who saw this Ifá for him and told him to go out and put a brain back in everyone he found without one, taking care not to make a mistake. But the child put them in swapped: the man's into the woman, the woman's into the man, the children's into the grown people and the grown people's into the children. That is why grown people are born with a child's mind and children with a grown person's. Ozain must be taken up.
