Patakíes of Otrupon Sa · The roads of the Odù

1Orunmila carries the salvation of Ifá

The people gathered because they needed a wise man to lead them, and they thought of Orunmila; but envy and hunger for power rose in some of them, who decided to get rid of him. Orunmila that day saw this Ifá, which advised him that if they came for him for a meeting, he should not go and should accept no post, because there was a trap. When they were gathered, the majority approved naming him to represent them; but Orunmila told them: «I have been among you for a time and I have taught you how to live so as to be happy, but I cannot stay forever, since my mission is to travel the world carrying the knowledge and the salvation of Ifá; among you there are honest people who can do a great deal for the happiness of this town.» And he left that land, letting them settle their own problems.

The people gathered because they needed a wise man to lead them for their own good, and they thought of Orunmila. They went for him, but as always, envy and hunger for power rose in some of them, who decided to get rid of Orunmila.

Orunmila that day made an osode and this Ifá came up, which advised him that if they came for him for a meeting, he should not go, and that he should not accept any post being granted to him, because there was a trap laid by the envious and the selfish.

When they were gathered, the majority approved naming Orunmila to represent them and to work for their happiness. Orunmila told them: «I have already been among you for some time and I have taught you how you should live so as to be happy; but I cannot stay with you forever in this land, since my mission is to travel the world to carry the knowledge, the good ways and the salvation of Ifá to everyone who listens to me in the different lands I pass through. I am sure that among you there are honest and good people who can do a great deal for the happiness of this town.»

So Orunmila left that land and let them settle their own problems.

2Orunmila and the masons

Orunmila cured and overcame what nobody else could, so the masons agreed to kill him and invited him to a meeting. But Orunmila's son, who was a mason, told him to go, but to leave when he gave him a sign, since he knew about the trap; and he made a tunnel in the washroom for him to escape through. Orunmila went, and when his son gave him the sign, he asked to be excused, went to the washroom and escaped through the tunnel. When the assembly saw that he was taking too long, they searched the whole temple, but he had already escaped. The masons came to understand Orunmila's merits, and agreed that from that day on they would ask for help by a sign when in danger, would not make war among brothers over religious beliefs or rules of government, and would tile their halls in every color as a symbol of love for all races and beliefs, since under the starry sky all are equal before Olofin.

3How Elegbara saved his son

Elegbara had a son surrounded by enemies who were waiting along the road he had to take, to do him harm. Having learned of the betrayal, Elegbara went out to find him, and from a distance saw his son coming toward where his enemies were hiding. With his virtue, he gave his son a great need to urinate, so the boy turned off the road and went into the bush to relieve himself; and he urinated so long that Elegbara had time to reach his side and take him away through the bush, cheating the enemies.
