1The monkey's two brothers

Edun and Ariwo, the monkey's brothers, would not stop arguing. Only Edun sacrificed. One day, arguing over a fruit high up in a tree, they drew the hunter, who killed Ariwo; Edun got away.

Ogbe Ofun divined in heaven for two brothers of the monkey, Edun and Ariwo, and told them to sacrifice and to stop arguing so as to avoid a sudden death. Edun made the sacrifice, but Ariwo refused, and neither of them gave up their constant quarreling.

One day, the two were arguing over a fruit high up in a tree. The argument drew the hunter, who shot at them; Ariwo fell wounded and died, and Edun ran off and escaped.

It is held that Ariwo would not have died if he had not had his quarrel with Edun. This person must serve Eshú and hold back from arguing.

2The cough and the throat

The throat gave the cough a place to stay and, out of curiosity, ate the kolá and coconut from its sacrifices; that is how the cough grew strong in its house. Only when the throat licked the medicine made of those same things did the cough flee to the stomach.

In heaven, the cough was told to sacrifice with kolá, coconut and a chicken to Eshú, and she did it; the throat was told to sacrifice with a goat, palm oil, honey and salt, so as not to take in a troublesome guest, but he refused.

On earth, the cough looked for somewhere to live and the throat took her in. The throat, out of curiosity, began to eat the cough's kolá and coconut, and so the cough grew strong in his house, until his voice could no longer be heard; those very things, which he had refused to sacrifice with, were the antidote.

Orunmila told him to make the sacrifice with two goats, honey, palm oil, and roasted coconut and kolá, and made a mixture with salt for him to lick. Since these were the things forbidden to the cough, she fled to the stomach, and the throat had peace at last. Do not take anyone in for a while, and do not eat kolá or coconut.

3How Ogbe Fun brought salt into the world

The elders of heaven gave Ogbe Fun a package of sea sand to leave at a crossroads; it turned into a heap of salt. The Obá's wife tasted it and, since the only newcomer was the newborn child, they credited the prosperity to him.

Before setting out for the world, the elders of heaven gave Ogbe Ofun sea sand to sacrifice with, and told him to leave it at a crossroads when he arrived, since there was nothing on earth to give soup its taste.

The next morning, the package had turned into a heap of salt that kept growing. The Obá's wife, on her way for water, tasted it, found it good and took it to the Obá, who tasted it too and sent word to leave money in its place.

The Obá called the town together looking for the newcomer; only Ogbe Ofun's father declared that his wife had given birth the night before. They credited the discovery to the child, and everyone took salt and left money. So Ogbe Ofun brought salt down from heaven, and his parents' prosperity with it. Sacrifice is made with salt and sea sand so that prosperity arrives.
