1The monkey's two brothers

Edun and Ariwo, the monkey's brothers, would not stop arguing. Only Edun sacrificed. One day, arguing over a fruit high up in a tree, they drew the hunter, who killed Ariwo; Edun got away.

Ogbe Ofun divined in heaven for two brothers of the monkey, Edun and Ariwo, and told them to sacrifice and to stop arguing so as to avoid a sudden death. Edun made the sacrifice, but Ariwo refused, and neither of them gave up their constant quarreling.

One day, the two were arguing over a fruit high up in a tree. The argument drew the hunter, who shot at them; Ariwo fell wounded and died, and Edun ran off and escaped.

It is held that Ariwo would not have died if he had not had his quarrel with Edun. This person must serve Eshú and hold back from arguing.

2The cough and the throat

The throat gave the cough a place to stay and, out of curiosity, ate the kolá and coconut from its sacrifices; that is how the cough grew strong in its house. Only when the throat licked the medicine made of those same things did the cough flee to the stomach.

When the cough and the throat were getting ready to leave heaven, Babá Kou Kou and Babá Kan Gidi Kan Gidi made divination for them. For the cough they marked a sacrifice to Eshú with kola, coconut and a chicken, and she did it. From the throat they asked for a goat, corojo, honey and salt, also for Eshú, so that on earth she would not be stuck with a troublesome guest; the throat refused.

Down below, the cough went looking for somewhere to live and the throat opened her door to her. Out of curiosity, the host started eating the kola and the coconut that the cough was keeping, and so the cough kept growing inside her house until her voice could not be heard. Those very materials, the ones she had refused to offer, were the antidote.

Orunmila then ordered her to sacrifice two goats, honey, corojo, roasted coconut and kola, and he prepared a mix with salt for her to lick. Since it was what the cough was forbidden, the cough ran off toward the stomach, and the throat finally got her peace. From this comes the advice: do not take anyone in for a while, because the guest brings insomnia, sleeplessness and serious problems, and stay away from eating kola and coconuts.

3How Ogbe Fun brought salt into the world

The elders of heaven gave Ogbe Fun a package of sea sand to leave at a crossroads; it turned into a heap of salt. The Obá's wife tasted it and, since the only newcomer was the newborn child, they credited the prosperity to him.

The elders of heaven, before Ogbe Ofun came down, gave him sea sand for the sacrifice and told him to leave it at a crossroads as soon as he arrived: back then there was nothing on earth that gave flavor to soup.

Day broke and that package was already a pile of salt that would not stop growing. The Obá's wife went by on her way to the water, tasted a little, thought it was good and took it to her husband; the Obá tasted it too and ordered money to be left where the salt was.

Then he gathered the town to find the newcomer, and only Ogbe Ofun's father said that his wife had given birth the night before. They credited the child with the find, and from then on each person took salt and left money. That is how salt, and with it the prosperity of his parents, came from heaven by the hand of Ogbe Ofun. That is why the sacrifice is made with salt and sea sand: that is what draws prosperity.
